You can walk around the main sights in about 30 minutes. No car needed – the old town is largely pedestrianised anyway.
Cathedral and breweries by day, quiet side street by night. Own kitchen, private bathroom, fast Wi-Fi, self check-in around the clock.
Bamberg is one of the few large German cities that survived the Second World War almost intact. The result is a fully preserved medieval old-town ensemble with half-timbered houses, patrician palaces, monasteries and the famous island location between the arms of the Regnitz. The area has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1993.
The special part: the heritage area is far more compact than people expect. The main sights are so close together that a walking tour fits comfortably into one day.
Old Town Hall on the bridge: an easy walk from Luitpoldstraße 16. The iconic painted building in the middle of the Regnitz is one of Germany's most photographed views.
Little Venice: a few minutes further on foot. The former fishermen's houses by the water look spectacular in morning mist or golden-hour evening light.
Bamberg Cathedral with the Bamberg Horseman: within walking distance, slightly uphill. A Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with the imperial tombs. Right next door: the Old Court and the New Residence with its rose garden.
Michelsberg (St Michael's monastery) and the beer cellars on the hill: viewpoints over the entire old town – a summer picnic and sunset classic.
The most central option is our apartments on Luitpoldstraße 16 – a few minutes' walk from the Hauptbahnhof and within easy walking distance of the old town. Every apartment has its own fully equipped kitchen, private bathroom, fast Wi-Fi and 24/7 self check-in. For a quieter base, our two apartments on Zollnerstraße 195 sit in eastern Bamberg. No. The old town is largely pedestrianised, and all the highlights are walkable from our stays. Parking in the old town is scarce anyway.
One day is enough for the main sights; for a relaxed visit with a brewery stop and Michelsberg, an extended weekend is worth it.
