Day trips from Bamberg: Franconian Switzerland, Nuremberg, Würzburg and the Main-Danube canal
Bamberg is a wonderful base. From castles and dripstone caves in Franconian Switzerland to Nuremberg and Würzburg by train, from Seehof Palace to a bike ride through the Regnitz valley – ideas for your second and third day, with tips for families and couples.

Anyone visiting Bamberg for the first time almost inevitably spends their first day in the old town: the cathedral, the Alte Hofhaltung, the Old Town Hall perched in the middle of the Regnitz, a smoked beer in the evening. But by the second or third day, it is well worth looking beyond the city limits. Bamberg sits in the heart of Upper Franconia – a landscape where castles, caves, village breweries, two great cultural cities and quiet river valleys all lie within easy reach of one another.
The best part: most of these destinations are easy to get to, often even without a car. Bamberg is on the intercity and regional rail network, is a hub for cycle routes and is conveniently placed on the A73 motorway. Here are our favourite ideas for a day out – sorted by whether you are travelling with children or seeking a little peace as a couple.
Franconian Switzerland: castles, caves and beer cellars
Franconian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz) begins practically on the doorstep, to the east of Bamberg. It is an upland region of rugged Jurassic limestone crags, juniper heaths and deeply cut valleys – and one of the most castle-rich areas in Germany. The classics include the castle at Pottenstein, the ruin above Streitberg and the mighty Gößweinstein castle with its baroque basilica. If you like caves, you will find plenty here too: the region has several large show caves with striking dripstone formations, offering a cool, atmospheric contrast to a summer's day.
For families, Pottenstein makes a good anchor: a summer toboggan run, via ferratas and a show cave all lie close together, along with walks of a manageable length. Couples tend to be drawn to the small villages with their famous rock cellars and brewery inns – Franconian Switzerland has one of the highest densities of breweries in the world. A relaxed afternoon in a shady beer cellar, with a Bratwurst and a moreish Kellerbier, is living tradition here.
The easiest way is by car (around half an hour to the first villages). At weekends and in season, excursion buses and leisure routes also serve the region; connections vary with the time of year, so a quick look at the current timetable in advance is worthwhile.
Nuremberg and Würzburg: two cities, one train ride
If the weather is unsettled or you fancy a bigger city, Nuremberg and Würzburg are ideal – both comfortably reachable by train, with no hunt for parking. Nuremberg lies to the south and is quickly reached by regional or long-distance services. There you will find the Imperial Castle above the old town, a maze of medieval lanes, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum and – worth seeing all year round, not just in Advent – the craft courtyards and gingerbread tradition. Families may also enjoy the zoo on the edge of the city.
Würzburg lies to the north-west on the river Main and is likewise well connected by rail. The city is elegant, wine-loving and full of students: the Würzburg Residence with its UNESCO World Heritage status and the famous ceiling fresco above the staircase, the Old Main Bridge lined with statues of saints, and the vineyards around the Marienberg Fortress. A glass of Franconian wine in its typical Bocksbeutel bottle, out on the bridge with a view of the river, makes for a perfect afternoon as a couple.
Our tip: for day trips like these, buy a suitable regional or state day ticket. These often let several people travel together cheaply, and they keep you flexible about which train you take home in the evening.
Seehof Palace: baroque amid the greenery
Not every excursion has to take you far. Seehof Palace lies in Memmelsdorf, right on the northern edge of Bamberg, and was once the summer residence of the prince-bishops of Bamberg. The four-winged baroque complex with its corner towers is surrounded by an extensive rococo garden – with clipped hedge compartments, sculptures and the famous cascade, a water staircase that is set in motion with a water display at certain times.
For a relaxed morning, Seehof is ideal: the garden invites you to stroll and picnic, parts of the palace can be visited, and a café rounds off the trip. Opening hours and the exact times of the water displays change with the season, so it is best to check them shortly beforehand. Because Memmelsdorf is so close, Seehof also works perfectly as a half-day trip – reached in no time by bike or bus.
On two wheels: the Main-Danube canal and Regnitz valley
Bamberg is a cyclist's paradise, and the flat river valley makes it easy even for less experienced families. The Main-Danube Canal runs right through the city – it begins at Bamberg and, together with the Main, offers a well-built, largely traffic-free cycle path along the water. Southwards the route heads towards Forchheim and on to Erlangen and Nuremberg; northwards you follow the Main downstream through gentle wine country.
For families, a leisurely ride upstream to Forchheim is a lovely option, with its pretty half-timbered old town and the Kellerwald – a shady wood full of traditional beer cellars, perfect for a break. If you prefer something more sporty, you can ride longer stretches and take the train back: many regional trains carry bikes, so you need not pedal the whole way home again.
The Regnitz valley itself and the immediate surroundings are also wonderful to cycle – past meadows, small weirs and riverside woodland. Take your time, plan a stop at an inn, and let the day wind down in the most unhurried way imaginable.
How to plan your day out
As a rough guide: nature-focused destinations such as Franconian Switzerland or a bike ride work best in settled weather and with children who want to be active. Nuremberg and Würzburg are the right choice for rainy days, a hunger for culture, or a relaxed stroll around town as a couple. And Seehof is the perfect half-day when you would rather not travel far but still want to experience something.
